Discovery & Questioning SkillEight minutes into discovery, the buyer describes exactly what you sell. What do you do next?
Twenty situational-judgement scenarios on the first real buyer conversation: the question that opens rather than closes, digging past the symptom to its cost, hearing the concern mentioned once, and holding the pitch back. Partial-credit scoring, four competencies, banded report.
Several of the wrong answers are things good sellers do every day
Five minutes into a first meeting with an operations director, the small talk is over and you have one question to open with: a leading one about delivery times, a fishing one about cost, a list of priorities, or an invitation to walk through what happens when an order runs late. Later the buyer describes a problem and waves it away — annoying, but we live with it. Later still they describe something your product solves almost exactly, and the pitch is right there. Across 20 scenarios the assessment watches what you ask, what you let go, and how long you can wait.
Scoring is on a 0–3 gradient with a reason recorded for every option, and distractors are anchored to the documented failure patterns of discovery: the leading question, accepting the symptom, the premature demonstration, the unexamined 'we'. Options that assert a cost figure the buyer never gave, quote a price the seller cannot hold, or turn a buyer's silence into a false confirmation score zero. The bank is original and behaviours are described generically; no branded questioning or qualification framework is referenced or implied.
The report separates four things a single score would blur: Question Form, Problem Excavation, Listening for the Unsaid and Pitch Restraint. A seller who asks beautifully open questions and then pitches at minute eight will see exactly that pattern, banded and interpreted, with a growth plan built from the weakest competency. The full scenario review afterwards shows why the closed question that felt efficient scored one, not three.
What you walk away with
Question Form, Problem Excavation, Listening for the Unsaid and Pitch Restraint on one chart, so the shape of your discovery — strong on form, weak on restraint, say — is visible before a word of the narrative is read.
Each competency comes back Emerging, Developing, Strong or Exceptional with a coaching note: what a Developing band on Problem Excavation sounds like in a real meeting, and the one change most likely to move it.
An AI-personalised narrative reads your 20 choices together and names the tendency — perhaps that you hear the hedge but do not stop for it — rather than restating the scores, so a manager can coach the habit and not the number.
For hiring, a single 0–100 score with band and a pass mark; for development, a prioritised growth plan and a review of every scenario with the reasoning behind each option, so 30 minutes of testing doubles as a lesson.
Inside your report
Illustrative sample — your report is generated from your own responses.
Every competency this test declares, scored from the items tagged to it — so the shape is yours, not a template.
Band edges at 40, 60 and 80. Each band carries its own coaching interpretation for that competency.

Frequently asked questions
Four things a seller does in the first real conversation with a buyer: whether the question asked opens a subject or closes it, whether a stated symptom is followed to its cost, whether a concern mentioned once and walked away from is picked up, and whether the pitch is held back while there is still something to learn. It is written for sellers who run their own discovery meetings and for the managers hiring them.
No. Several scenarios reward a closed or direct question because the moment calls for one, and several of the low-scoring options are polished open questions asked at the wrong time. Options are length-matched, the best answer moves position, and every option is scored on a 0–3 gradient with a written reason. Options that assert a cost the buyer never gave, quote a price you cannot hold, or convert silence into a confirmation score zero.
Thirty minutes for 20 scenarios in a single sitting. The report arrives immediately and includes an overall score with band against a 70 per cent pass mark, a radar and banded bars across the four competencies with coaching interpretations, an AI-personalised narrative of strengths and development areas, a growth plan built from your lowest competency, and a review of every scenario. There is nothing further to unlock.
In an interview, take the lowest competency and ask for a live example: if Pitch Restraint came back Developing, ask about the last meeting where they demonstrated early. For self-development, the growth plan is a four-week agenda and the scenario review is the study material. Because the report is generated from your own responses, a retake after coaching shows which bands moved.
The scenarios are country-neutral and product-neutral: a machining firm, an operations director, a buyer who says 'we' without naming anyone. Nothing depends on local market knowledge, so the assessment is used for hiring and development across India, the Gulf, the UK and Southeast Asia alike. It is priced in INR and USD; the current price in both currencies is shown on this page.
Foundation, core selling, specialist and sales-leadership bands — every one an original situational-judgement bank with weighted partial credit, a stated reason for every option, and ethics scored to zero on a mis-sell. Hire with the band that matches the role, or develop with the one that matches the gap.
