Shift Handover & Continuity JudgmentShift Handover & Continuity Judgment. Work fails at the joins, and nobody measures the join.

Every assessment on the market scores one person doing one task. This one scores what happens when the task passes to somebody else - what you pass on, what you hold back, and what you assert that nobody ever established.

Scored by signal detection, not by a coverage count

Six of the thirty-two exercises are a new item format. You are given a short shift log and a set of candidate handover lines, and you choose what travels. Three kinds of line are in every set. Some are facts that change what the next person does. Some are true, finished and useless, so passing them on costs the receiver attention and buys nothing. And some are causes, motives or forecasts that nobody established, written in exactly the same flat voice as the facts. That third kind is what separates a good handover from a confident one, and it is why a coverage count cannot score this: counting facts recalled rewards passing on everything, and counting errors rewards passing on nothing.

So it is scored the way a detection problem is scored. You get a discrimination figure - how well you tell a fact that must travel from noise and from invention - and a threshold figure - how much you pass on at all. They are reported separately and on purpose. Two people with identical discrimination, one who passes on a great deal and one who passes on almost nothing, are a Complete handover and a Terse one, and that is a genuinely useful distinction between two colleagues that a single accuracy percentage destroys.

The report is a quadrant with an action written into each of the four corners rather than an adjective. High discrimination and an inclusive threshold is not called excellent, it is called pair them with a new starter and use their handovers as the template. Low discrimination and a narrow threshold is not called weak, it is called the risk here is what is not said, coach the outstanding-items rule first. All four corners are labelled in text whether or not you land in them, so the page reads without the colour and without the dot.

Four capabilities of a handover, each measured by eight independent scored exercises and reported as a classification rather than a number:

What you walk away with

Your discrimination, with its band

How well you tell a fact that must travel from something finished and from something invented, drawn with the range a retest would land in.

Your threshold, reported without a verdict

How much you pass on. Neither good nor bad on its own, and the reason two people with the same accuracy are different colleagues.

The quadrant, with an action in every corner

Where you sit on the two axes, and what a manager should actually do about it - not an adjective, a decision.

Two kinds of false alarm, split

Passing on something finished costs attention. Passing on a cause nobody established changes what the next person believes, and gets repeated downstream as fact.

Receiving as well as giving

What you do with a handover delivered in three sentences by somebody already holding their bag, and with a term you did not understand.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Shift Handover & Continuity Judgment assessment measure?

Four capabilities: passing on what matters, not asserting what you do not know, taking a handover well, and owning what is still open. It is written to work in any shift-based or rota-based setting - a ward, a production line, a security desk, an on-call rotation, a depot, a contact centre - so no item depends on a clinical, technical or sector-specific fact. What is measured is judgment about the join between two people's work.

How is it scored?

By signal detection. Six exercises give you a shift log and a set of candidate handover lines: some are facts that change what the next person does, some are true and finished, and some are causes or forecasts nobody established. Your hits and false alarms produce a discrimination figure and a threshold figure, reported separately, because a coverage count rewards passing on everything and an error count rewards passing on nothing. The two kinds of false alarm are also split, since passing on something finished costs attention while passing on an invention changes what the receiver believes.

Who is it for?

Employers hiring or developing anybody whose work passes to somebody else at the end of a shift, and the people doing that work. It suits healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, security, facilities, IT on-call and contact centres equally, because the construct is the handover rather than the domain. It is also useful as a development instrument on its own: the report names a specific behaviour to change on the next handover.

How long does it take and what do I get?

About 35 minutes for 32 scored exercises. You get a bespoke report drawn as a quadrant with an action written into each of the four corners, your discrimination with its band, your threshold without a verdict attached, the two kinds of false alarm split apart, four capability classifications, the base rates the scoring runs on, and one if-then change. Downloadable as a colour PDF that also reads in black and white.

How much does it cost?

Rs 749 in India including GST, or US$7.99 elsewhere, one time, for one full sitting and report. Handover training is sold per seat and teaches a template rather than measuring judgment, protocol e-learning tests recall of an acronym, and commercial pre-hire suites are annual recruiter subscriptions with nothing on this construct at all. Organisations can use AssessAll credits at 25 credits per person.

One of the AssessAll applied-judgment assessments

Each one takes a single capability, puts you inside the situations where it is actually tested, and scores your choices against published evidence — with a report designed for that capability alone, not a template. They span hiring, compliance, education, operations and personal skill.

Methodology: Measures applied handover judgment through original situational and selection items keyed to published constructs. Construct statement: it measures whether a person transfers the information and the responsibility a successor needs, without asserting what was never established, and whether they receive a handover actively. It does not measure domain knowledge, memory span, or performance on the shift itself. Declared response instruction: behavioural tendency throughout - every stem asks what the respondent would actually do. Sources drawn on across the construct area: the clinical and industrial handover literature and its repeated finding that most failures are omissions rather than errors of fact; structured-handover protocol evaluations and the evidence that structure improves transfer while long templates degrade it; closed-loop communication and read-back research, in which confirmation at the receiving end predicts transfer better than anything the sender does; the distinction between information transfer and responsibility transfer, and the finding that an item without a named owner survives multiple handovers untouched; situation-awareness research on the difference between what was logged and what was noticed; interruption and time-pressure studies at shift boundaries; information-overload work showing that recall falls sharply beyond a small number of items, so completeness measured at the sending end is not transfer; signal-detection theory and the separation of sensitivity from response threshold, which is why over-inclusion and under-inclusion are reported apart here rather than netted into an accuracy figure; research on causal and motive attribution in incident records, where a supplied reason is repeated downstream as established fact; practice-drift and standardisation work on changes that live in one shift's local knowledge; the dual-channel finding that spoken and written handover do different jobs and that neither substitutes for the other; and situational-judgment-test validity together with behavioural-tendency response instructions. All items are original works. No trademarked instrument, protocol acronym or professional body is reproduced or named, and no affiliation with any of the sources above is claimed. Scores are provisional: the base rates used for chance correction are authored priors, published in the report, to be replaced by observed marginals once live data exists.
