You survived becoming a manager. Have you become a good one?

A maturity diagnostic for managers one to three years into the role — measuring whether your management has grown from firefighting into a system, and whether your team is compounding or just coping.

The plateau nobody warns you about

The research is uncomfortable: manager quality explains around 70% of the difference in team engagement, the best managers coach rather than supervise — and most managers plateau in year two, running teams on personal heroics that feel like competence. This assessment measures exactly that difference: 42 exercises including a signature Monday-morning triage simulation where you order a real manager's competing demands, evolving two-part scenarios whose second half depends on your first choice, and team-data reads where the numbers tell a story most managers misread.

Every judgement option is defensible — the scoring keys come from published research on manager effectiveness, the structure of managerial time, goal-setting, and team conditions. Your operating-habits self-ratings never touch the score: they feed a calibration check against what your choices actually demonstrated.

The verdict is a position on two axes most assessments conflate: Operational Grip (does the work run as a system?) and People Leverage (does capability compound?). Strong managers are usually strong on one. The rare ones are strong on both — and know which one they are.

What you walk away with

Your quadrant, named honestly

Multiplying Manager, Controller's Plateau, Beloved Firefighter, or Running on Instinct — the two-axis verdict that tells you which half of management you have actually built, with the evidence behind it.

Your triage decisions, replayed

The Monday-morning simulations score your ordering against a leverage-first key — and show you exactly which quiet, high-stakes items you queued behind the merely loud.

Your management patterns, flagged

The Hero Habit, the Inspection Reflex, the Vanishing Manager, Motion Without Traction — the four patterns that cap managers at year three, identified from your actual picks with counter-habits attached.

Where your hour really goes

A time-allocation profile of your choices — designing, coaching, doing, directing, deferring — set against what the research says purposeful managers do differently.

A twelve-week operating plan

Your three weakest disciplines sequenced into a quarter of concrete installs: the cadence, contracts and counter-habits that convert firefighting into a system.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I am actually a good manager?

Not from delivery alone — teams can hit dates on a manager's personal heroics for years. The evidence-based test is whether the work runs as a system (clear owned goals, held cadences, purposeful triage) and whether people compound (coaching over answers, delegated decisions, safety to disagree). This assessment measures both axes through 42 scored exercises and returns a named quadrant verdict.

What is the difference between this and the First-Time Manager assessment?

First-Time Manager Readiness measures whether you can make the IC-to-manager transition. Established Manager Excellence assumes you made it and asks what one to three years in the chair has built: it tests operating maturity — triage, cadence, goal systems, coaching depth, delegation of decisions — at a level a new manager is not expected to have.

What does the Monday-morning triage simulation measure?

You order six competing demands — a client fire, a vague message from a strong performer, admin deadlines, an already-delegated thread — by what a purposeful manager handles first. Scoring follows the research on managerial time: leverage and stakes first, arrival order and loudness last. Most managers discover they queue their highest-leverage items behind their most audible ones.

Can I game it by choosing the textbook answers?

The options are designed so every one is defensible and the textbook tell-tales are removed: length-matched, position-balanced, no always-right pattern. Weighted keys give partial credit by degree of judgement, and your self-ratings are excluded from scoring entirely — they only feed a calibration check that often reveals more than the score.

Who is this assessment for, and does it work outside India?

Managers one to three years into the role, team leads preparing for bigger scope, and organisations developing their manager bench. Scenarios are set in the modern professional workplace and keyed to international research; it runs online in about 40 minutes, priced in INR and USD.

This is one rung of the Leadership Ladder

Every level from aspiring leader to the boardroom has its own readiness assessment — its own research base, scoring model and verdict report. Wherever you are now, and wherever you are heading next, there is a rung that measures it.

Methodology: Measures six disciplines of established management through an original triage simulation, weighted situational-judgement scenarios (including evolving two-part situations), most/least forced choices, team-data interpretation exercises, a balanced-keyed operating-habits scale, and rubric-graded written artefacts. Scoring is evidence-keyed to published research on manager effectiveness (large-scale studies of manager behaviours and their team-level effects), the structure of managerial time, purposeful action, goal-setting, team enabling conditions and psychological safety. Judgement patterns distinguish system-building from heroic, supervisory, absent and unfocused management. All items are original works; not affiliated with or derived from any commercial instrument.
