It scores recovery, which is the thing nobody measures
Twenty of the thirty-four exercises are a consequence cascade. A length of edge protection is missing on the second floor. You decide. The next rung tells you where the site now is - the gap is barriered, the joiners have moved, and the site manager wants the floor open within the hour - and you decide again. Four rungs, five situations: an open edge, a trench after overnight rain, a lift that turned out heavier than the plan, another trade's damaged lead, and cutting work two metres from stored packaging.
Here is what makes it different from every branching test you have taken. The value of each move is measured against the moves available AT THAT RUNG, not against the perfect path. So the best available move from a bad position scores full marks at that point. Make a poor first decision and handle the consequence well and you get the credit for handling it, because handling it is the skill. Most instruments let one early mistake follow you down the page and then describe the result as your judgement, which is a defect in the test being reported as a defect in the person.
The position at every rung is written into the exercise and is identical for everybody. Nothing branches on your earlier answer, so no rung can hand you a state with no good move left in it, and you are never scored inside a mess your own answer made. The report is a decision trail: five paths drawn against the best and worst available at each step, and every case also printed as a plain table so the whole thing survives a black and white print in a site office.
