The Everyday Wayfinding and Place Memory Assessment for Commuters, Drivers and Travellers is a thirty-five-minute self-insight profile of how a person chooses the next move when a route is unfamiliar, for commuters, drivers, riders and anybody who has just moved city, reported as one route-decision figure with its band, and a separate place-memory placement kept apart from it.

Ten of the exercises are one journey, not ten unrelated questions. Each rung states the position everybody has reached at that point, so an early wrong turn is never read as if it caused the next nine mistakes: the score at each rung is the value of the move chosen against the best move available from exactly that position. The best available move from a bad position earns full credit at that rung, and the report calls this recovery credit and shows it, rung by rung, in a decision trail rather than asserting it in a sentence.

Zero on the headline is not half marks. Every rung carries a declared answer prior, the share of ordinary respondents expected to choose each move, and zero is what that typical respondent earns, weighted the same way the headline is. A score above zero means better than that; a score below it means worse. Two fixed habits, always press on and always go back, are priced on the route's own values and printed on the report, so that pressing on, which feels decisive, cannot be mistaken for judgement when the numbers say otherwise.

The place-memory strand, six spans of a few seconds each, is not part of the headline, in the arithmetic or in the words. Holding a handful of lit positions for a few seconds and choosing the next move on a route are different abilities, and a person can be strong at one and ordinary at the other. It gets its own panel, its own three-way placement, and its own reminder that a memory span moves with sleep, tiredness and much else, so it is read on its own rather than folded into a route figure it has nothing to do with.

The other three parts, orientation and direction, reading generic map symbols and signs, and what to fix in mind before setting off, are placed in words rather than given a number, because six or seven exercises cannot support one honestly. The report says so in the same breath as the placement, rather than printing a precise-looking figure a handful of exercises cannot carry.

No real city, road, country, map product or navigation app is named anywhere, and nothing on the page is a cognitive or clinical screen: memory and attention move with sleep, medication, illness and disability, this instrument cannot tell those apart from anything else, and it is never a sole basis for any decision about anybody. Is this a cognitive or memory screening test?

No, and the report says so before it says anything else. It is a self-insight profile of route decisions, place memory, orientation, sign reading and planning in one sitting of about thirty-five minutes. Memory and attention move with sleep, medication, illness and disability, this instrument cannot tell those apart from anything else, and it is never a sole basis for any decision about anybody.

Why is the place-memory result reported apart from the headline number?

Because holding a few lit positions for a few seconds and choosing the next move on an unfamiliar route are different abilities. Somebody can be strong at one and ordinary at the other, so folding them into one number would hide exactly the thing worth knowing. The memory strand gets its own panel and its own three-way placement, never a number, and never added into the headline.

What does the zero on the route figure actually mean?

Construct statement: this instrument measures how a person chooses the next move when finding the way through an unfamiliar place on foot or by car, how they hold the order and direction of a described route, how they read the generic symbols and words that routes are described with, and what they fix in mind before setting off; it also records, entirely apart from all of that, how many lit positions on a grid they can hold for a few seconds. It is not a cognitive screen, not a clinical or medical assessment of memory or attention, not a diagnosis of anything and not evidence for or against any condition: memory and attention move with sleep, medication, illness and disability, and this instrument cannot tell those apart from anything else, so it is never a sole basis for any decision about anybody. The orientation, sign-reading and planning strands are each corrected against their own declared priors and carry a placement only. McDonald's omega is reported rather than alpha, estimated before live data from exercise count and a stated assumed inter-item correlation, printed unrounded.
