What is Client Relationship?

Client Relationship is building a partnership durable enough to survive a mistake. It is earned through reliability on small commitments, proactive bad news, and usefulness beyond the immediate scope — and it is measured by whether the client brings you a problem early or tells you once they have already decided.

Client Relationship is one of 29 competencies in the AssessAll Capability Framework, in the Commercial & Client domain — How value is created and kept with customers — diagnosis before prescription, negotiation, and durable partnership.

What client relationship looks like at four levels

Every AssessAll competency score is reported on a 0–100 scale and interpreted against four published anchors. The wording below is the same interpretation a person receives in their own report — published here so a manager can read a score without needing one.

Developing0–39

Your client relationships may be transactional — tied to the current deal rather than a lasting partnership. Investing in trust beyond the immediate ask is what creates renewals, referrals, and resilience.

Emerging40–59

You maintain good relationships while actively engaged but they cool between deals. The growth is in staying valuable when you're not selling.

Strong60–79

You build genuine, durable client relationships based on trust and delivered value, and you stay connected to their evolving needs.

Exceptional80–100

You become the trusted advisor clients call first — anticipating their needs, telling them hard truths, and holding relationships that survive price competition and personnel change.

Signs it is missing

Competencies are easier to spot by their absence. These are observable behaviours, not personality judgements — each one is something a colleague could describe from memory.

  • Contact is concentrated at renewal and at escalation, and nowhere in between.
  • The relationship rests on one person on each side, and neither organisation knows the other.
  • Bad news reaches the client from somebody else.

Evidence to look for

Questions that make a person describe what they actually did, rather than what they believe about themselves. Use them in an interview, a development conversation or a promotion panel, and listen for a specific situation, a specific action and a cost.

  1. Which of your clients would take your call about a problem before deciding? Why that one?
  2. Tell me about a mistake you made with a client and how the relationship came through it.
  3. Who in the client organisation, other than your main contact, would speak for you?

These are interview and observation prompts written for this page. They are deliberately not items from a live AssessAll instrument — published items stop measuring anything.

How to develop it

The development moves AssessAll puts in a growth plan when this competency is a person's priority area. Each is small enough to start this week.

  • Add value to one client this month with no ask attached — an insight, an introduction, a heads-up.
  • At your next renewal, re-discover how their needs have changed rather than defending the status quo.
  • Tell a client one uncomfortable truth they need to hear; it's what advisors do.

How AssessAll measures it

Client Relationship is not measured by a single question. Responses across an assessment map to the competency, roll up into a 0–100 score, and are interpreted against the four anchors above. Because every AssessAll assessment speaks the same competency language, results from different instruments accumulate into one profile rather than a pile of unrelated scores.

Which instrument is appropriate depends on the decision you are making. Situational judgement items suit judgement-under-pressure competencies; structured behavioural evidence and multi-rater feedback suit the ones only other people can see. See how to assess leadership skills for the item types, or browse the assessment catalogue and the store.

How client relationship aligns to public frameworks

The AssessAll Capability Framework is an original work. The table shows what this competency corresponds to in five public government and standards frameworks, so a result travels across borders. Alignment, not derivation — no proprietary instrument is reproduced.
