# What is People Acumen?

People Acumen is reading individuals and group dynamics accurately and adjusting your approach to what you read. It is the difference between one style applied to everybody and a leader who notices who has gone quiet, who is unpersuaded but compliant, and what is being discussed outside the room.

<!-- #levels -->
## What people acumen looks like at four levels

- **Developing (0–39)** — You may miss the unspoken signals in a room or be surprised by how people react. Sharpening your read of people — and tailoring your approach to who's in front of you — lifts every interaction.
- **Emerging (40–59)** — You read people reasonably in one-on-ones but miss group dynamics or subtle cues. The growth is in noticing what's beneath the surface.
- **Strong (60–79)** — You read people and rooms accurately, sense what's unsaid, and adjust your approach to the person and the moment.
- **Exceptional (80–100)** — You read people and group dynamics with unusual accuracy — sensing motivation, tension, and intent — and adapt fluidly so people feel understood and influence comes naturally.

<!-- #anti-signals -->
## Signs it is missing

- Reads silence in a meeting as agreement.
- Applies one motivational style to a team of very different people and blames the ones it does not fit.
- Learns about a resignation, a rift or a rumour last.

<!-- #evidence -->
## Evidence to look for

- In your last team meeting, who was not persuaded? How could you tell?
- Describe two people on your team and how differently you have to work with each.
- What is being said about the current change that is not being said to you?

<!-- #develop -->
## How to develop it

- In your next meeting, watch one quiet person and infer what they're thinking but not saying; check it privately after.
- Adjust your communication style deliberately for one person who's different from you this week.
- When someone's words and tone don't match, gently ask about the gap rather than taking the words at face value.
