# What is Negotiation & Value?

Negotiation and Value is creating and claiming value in the same conversation without damaging the relationship that has to survive it. It rests on preparation — knowing your walk-away, the other side's alternatives, and which variables besides price can be traded — far more than on nerve in the room.

<!-- #levels -->
## What negotiation & value looks like at four levels

- **Developing (0–39)** — You may treat negotiation as a fixed pie to split or concede on price too quickly. Learning to expand value before dividing it — and to anchor on value not price — changes outcomes substantially.
- **Emerging (40–59)** — You negotiate competently on price but less so on the broader value and trade-offs. The growth is in re-anchoring conversations on value.
- **Strong (60–79)** — You create value through trade-offs before claiming it, anchor on value rather than price, and protect the relationship through the deal.
- **Exceptional (80–100)** — You negotiate so both sides come out ahead — expanding the pie, trading on differing priorities, and claiming value without ever leaving the other side feeling beaten.

<!-- #anti-signals -->
## Signs it is missing

- Discounts first, and early, because price is the only variable on the table.
- Enters a negotiation without a walk-away, so every concession is available.
- Wins the terms and loses the working relationship that has to deliver them.

<!-- #evidence -->
## Evidence to look for

- What was your walk-away in your last negotiation, and did you nearly use it?
- Besides price, what did you trade? What was it worth to each side?
- Tell me about a deal you won on terms that later made delivery painful.

<!-- #develop -->
## How to develop it

- Before your next negotiation, list what's cheap for you to give but valuable to them, and vice versa.
- When you hit a price objection, re-anchor on the value and risk-reduction before discussing any discount.
- Aim for an outcome the other side would also call fair; durable deals need it.
