# What is Accountability & Ownership?

Accountability and Ownership is holding the outcome rather than the task, with no diffusion of responsibility when it goes wrong. It shows as a single named owner for a result, problems reported early rather than at the deadline, and an honest explanation kept clearly distinct from an excuse.

<!-- #levels -->
## What accountability & ownership looks like at four levels

- **Developing (0–39)** — When things go wrong, the instinct may be to explain why it wasn't fully in your control. Leaders who own the outcome regardless — and are seen to — earn disproportionate trust and influence.
- **Emerging (40–59)** — You take ownership of your direct work but it gets fuzzier on shared or delegated outcomes. The growth is in owning the result even when you didn't do the work.
- **Strong (60–79)** — You own outcomes fully, including your team's, look first at what you could have done differently, and don't let responsibility diffuse.
- **Exceptional (80–100)** — You set the standard for ownership — taking accountability upward, giving credit downward, and creating a culture where people own results rather than defend positions.

<!-- #anti-signals -->
## Signs it is missing

- A missed outcome has three owners, which means none.
- Bad news arrives on the due date, fully formed.
- Post-mortems identify a cause that is always outside the team.

<!-- #evidence -->
## Evidence to look for

- Tell me about something that went wrong on your watch. What was your part in it?
- How early does bad news reach you, and what have you done to make that true?
- Who owns the outcome you are most worried about right now?

<!-- #develop -->
## How to develop it

- After your next setback, state what you'd do differently before discussing any external cause.
- Own a team miss upward without naming individuals; handle the individual piece privately.
- Replace 'that's not my area' with 'here's what I can do about it' once this week.
