# What are the alternatives to Mercer Mettl, and when is one actually a better fit?

Choosing an assessment platform is really two decisions: what you need measured, and how you want to pay for it. Mercer Mettl sells a broad enterprise suite quoted on request. AssessAll publishes a per-candidate price. Below is what each does, verified on the vendors' own pages, including the cases where Mettl is the better answer.

_Every claim about Mercer | Mettl was checked against its own public pages on 2026-09-17._

## What Mercer | Mettl is good at

- Coding assessment is Mettl's deepest product. Its Codelysis coding simulator page advertises 20+ languages and a library of 900+ questions, with similarity detection built on MOSS (Measure of Software Similarity) plus an in-house string-comparison algorithm. ([mettl.com — Codelysis coding simulator](https://mettl.com/coding-simulator/))
- Proctoring at examination scale. The homepage states an AI-based proctoring suite running 200,000+ proctored assessments in a day, and names 700+ academic institutes among its customers. ([mettl.com — homepage](https://mettl.com/))
- The certification list procurement asks for. The homepage displays ISO 27001, ISO 9001, SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR-ready badges, alongside TÜV and NABCB marks. ([mettl.com — homepage](https://mettl.com/))
- Breadth and reach. The homepage states 6,000+ customers, 25M+ assessments annually, 100+ countries and 20+ languages, across eight solution lines including virtual assessment centres and online examination delivery. ([mettl.com — homepage](https://mettl.com/))

## Pricing

- **Mercer | Mettl:** No price is published. mettl.com/en/pricing is a quote-request form — it asks the buyer to choose products and offers a phone number, under the heading "Get Personalized Pricing for Your Customized Assessments". There is no per-candidate rate, no plan tier and no currency figure anywhere on it. ([mettl.com — pricing page](https://mettl.com/en/pricing/))
- **AssessAll:** AssessAll publishes its unit price on /pricing: 1 credit = ₹30 = US$0.50, with packs at 250 credits for ₹7,500, 1,000 for ₹27,900 and 5,000 for ₹1,30,500, and single assessments in the public store from ₹649. New signups get 100 free credits (250 for organisations).

## Side by side

| | Mercer | Mettl | AssessAll |
|---|---|---|
| Published price | Quoted on request. The pricing page is a form; no figure is published. | ₹30 / US$0.50 per credit, published, and it is what checkout charges. |
| How you buy | Annual contract following a quote, per the pricing page's quote-request flow. | Pay-as-you-go credits with no seats and no subscription. Purchased credits do not expire; the free signup credits are valid 90 days. |
| Coding assessment | Codelysis: 20+ languages, 900+ questions, MOSS-based similarity detection, per its product page. | Live code execution exists in the assessment pipeline, but the public catalogue offers a small number of code-bearing work samples rather than a coding-test library. The SQL work sample runs each statement twice — once on visible example data and once on hidden rows containing duplicates, blanks and boundary timestamps. |
| Proctoring | AI proctoring suite, secure browser, 200,000+ proctored assessments in a day per the homepage. | AI proctoring at +5 credits (₹150 / US$2.50) per attempt: webcam and screen capture, device check, and violation counters consolidated into a High / Medium / Low integrity band on the report. |
| Certifications | ISO 27001, ISO 9001, SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR-ready, TÜV, NABCB per the homepage. | AssessAll publishes no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification. If your security review requires one, that is a disqualifying difference and it is stated here rather than buried. |
| Languages | 20+ languages per the homepage. | AssessAll publishes no multi-language claim. Assume English unless the specific assessment page says otherwise. |
| What the report shows | Not compared. AssessAll has not opened a Mettl sample report, so nothing is claimed about one. | Sample reports are published ungated as PDFs at /guides/reports, walked through panel by panel, including the parts that are measurement error rather than signal. |

## When to choose Mercer | Mettl instead

- **You are screening a developer pipeline and need a coding-test library.** — Codelysis advertises 900+ questions across 20+ languages with MOSS-based plagiarism detection. AssessAll's public catalogue has a handful of code-bearing work samples and no comparable library. For volume developer screening, this is not close.
- **Procurement requires ISO 27001 or SOC 2 Type 2 before a vendor can be shortlisted.** — Mettl's homepage displays both. AssessAll publishes neither. A security review that treats certification as a gate will stop at that gate, and no amount of price transparency moves it.
- **You are delivering high-stakes examinations for an institution.** — Mettl states 700+ academic institutes and 200,000+ proctored assessments in a day, and sells an online examination platform as a separate product line. AssessAll publishes no throughput figure and no examination-delivery product.
- **You need assessments in languages other than English, or a single global vendor across many countries.** — Mettl states 20+ languages and 100+ countries. AssessAll makes no multi-language claim, so a multilingual rollout would be running ahead of what the product publishes.
- **You want a named consulting relationship attached to the assessment.** — Mettl is part of Mercer, and buyers who want assessment bundled with workforce consulting are buying something AssessAll does not sell. AssessAll sells the instrument and the report.

## Why this page concedes first

A comparison written by one of the two vendors is self-interested, and a reader who has opened three of them already knows it. The only version worth publishing is one that states what the competitor is better at before it states anything else, names the situations in which you should not buy from the author, and shows the arithmetic that could eliminate the author's own product.

Everything asserted about Mercer | Mettl on this page was read on Mettl's own pages on the date shown at the top, and the pages are linked so you can check them. Where a figure is Mettl's own self-report — customer counts, throughput, country coverage — it is attributed rather than asserted, because a competitor is not in a position to verify another company's internal numbers and should not pretend otherwise.

Where something could not be opened, nothing is claimed. No Mettl sample report has been reviewed, so no row compares report quality.

## The structural difference, stated plainly

Mettl sells a broad enterprise suite — talent assessment, coding, proctoring, examinations, hackathons, virtual assessment centres — and prices it by quotation. AssessAll sells a narrower catalogue with a published unit price and no seat licence.

Neither model is better in the abstract. A licence wins on unit cost once volume is high and predictable, which is why enterprises sign them. Pay-as-you-go wins when volume is lumpy, seasonal or unknown, and when the finance question is "what does one more candidate cost" rather than "what is this year's budget".

The failure mode of a licence is under-use, and it is the expensive one. An annual allowance divided by the candidates you actually tested is the real per-candidate price you paid — and that denominator is published far less often than the price is. Ask any vendor quoting an allowance what happens to unused volume at renewal, and get the answer in the contract rather than in an email.

## What to ask both vendors, in writing

The questions below are not rhetorical and none of them favours AssessAll. They are the ones whose answers change a shortlist, and they are worth sending to every vendor in the same email so the replies are comparable.

What is the per-candidate cost at my actual expected volume, and what happens to unused volume at renewal? Which certifications do you hold, with the certificate's scope statement and expiry date? Where is attempt data stored, where is proctoring imagery stored, and on what basis does either leave that location? Can I see a full sample report for the exact assessment I would run, before signing? What evidence do you have that this instrument predicts performance in a role like mine — a technical manual, a validation study, or a claim?

That last question is the one most likely to separate vendors, and it is the reason this site publishes an evidence index listing every primary source it argues from, including the ones that cut its own numbers.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Mercer Mettl cost?

Mettl does not publish a price. Its pricing page, checked on 17 September 2026, is a quote-request form headed "Get Personalized Pricing for Your Customized Assessments" with a phone number and a product picker — no per-candidate rate and no plan tiers. Third-party sites publish estimates for it; those are not the vendor's figures and are not reproduced here.

### Is AssessAll cheaper than Mercer Mettl?

That cannot be answered honestly, because Mettl publishes no price to compare against. What can be said is that AssessAll's price is knowable before a sales conversation: ₹30 / US$0.50 per credit, ₹780 (US$13.00) for an applied-skill sitting, ₹930 (US$15.50) with proctoring. Divide any Mettl quote by your candidate count and compare it to those figures yourself.

### Does AssessAll do coding assessments like Mettl's Codelysis?

Not at that scale, and the difference is worth being clear about. Codelysis advertises 900+ questions across 20+ languages. AssessAll runs live code execution inside its assessment pipeline and publishes a small number of code-bearing work samples — the SQL work sample runs each statement against hidden rows with duplicates, blanks and boundary timestamps — but it is not a coding-test library and should not be shortlisted as one.

### Does AssessAll hold ISO 27001 or SOC 2?

No. AssessAll publishes neither certification. Mettl's homepage displays ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and SOC 2 Type 2. If certification is a procurement gate for you, that is a real reason to choose Mettl and it is stated here rather than omitted.

### When was this comparison last verified?

17 September 2026. Every claim about Mercer | Mettl was read on Mettl's own pages on that date, and each page opened is linked at the foot of this comparison. Rows that cannot be re-verified are deleted rather than left standing.
